Default Help on a New Decanter

I just purchased a new decanter on eBay. I can't believe I got it for so little. To avoid problems with copyright, I'll post the eBay link, instead of the pictures:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

I think the decanter is enchanting. The gold applied triangular glass reminds me of work that Nason did for Cenedese. The handle reminds me of Salviati or Barovier. The deer reminds me of abstract glass animals that Bianconi did for Nason. (all these things from Murano Magic). Does anyone have opinions on who might have done this decanter? The seller writes that it is 13 inches tall and is 50-60 years old.

A wonderful vase! It seems to me to be older than 50 years....

Thanks, Alex. Even though the seller described it as Murano, I am looking at different countries. The stopper looks a lot like an unusual Moser decanter that is on eBay right now, but I'm not sure the eBay decanter (with abstract birds) is actually Moser. The closest things I have found to this decanter are Bianconi, Nason (including Bianconi), and Moser. I've pretty much ruled out Bianconi, so that leaves Moser and Nason and every other artist in countries that did this type of work. It will be easier to rule out the New World countries when I have the vase in hand.

I am learning a lot about glass, though. It is a nice benefit of getting a mystery piece. I am delighted with the pictures of the decanter, no matter where it is from and who did it. I hope the decanter itself is as delightful.

I found a liquor decanter with the same deer as my decanter. It was made c. 1920 by Moser (ROYO), probably for the Spanish market. So, the decanter is not Murano after all. It is most likely Moser. WooHoo!

I don't feel so bad about sending the apparenza bowl back now.

Its a very nicely made decanter. Great Find! The design and deer remind me of a medieval tapistry.

The decanter arrived today. It was painted by Cire instead of Royo. I had read my Moser book wrong. It is signed, so there is no question. There is some debate whether the Cire pieces are Moser or not, but they are still considered 1920's Moser made for the Spanish market. (I've read the last words so often now that they sound cliche'.)

The decanter is overwhelming. It is bigger than I had pictured in my mind. It certainly catches the eye I am delighted.

Very beautiful decanter, I love it! I wish I knew 1/4 as much as you all seem to know about glass. It all is a bit overwhelming to someone new like myself. But very lovely indeed, I am glad you are pleased with it........

Thanks for the compliments on the decanter and glass knowledge. To tell the truth, I don't know very much about glass. I just got into it last year. I bought some books on the glass that interests me. The trouble is that most there is so much glass and not enough pages for pictures of it all Of course, there is also the trouble of not looking in the right book for the answers.

One thing I like about glass is the detective work. The eBay seller that had a similar piece of glass steered me toward a book. I bought the book and it had the probable answer. Then I realized my other Moser book also had it. So now I have two Moser books and too little money to buy his work.

The auction for this decanter does show that it pays to know the glass that is being sold. The seller would probably have received much higher bids if the decanter had been identified correctly. Royo/Cire pieces would probably go for a lot more if people were sure they were Moser. Personally, I don't think they look like Moser, but then I don't know all their work. I understand why the seller thought the decanter was Murano. It looks like Murano glass with Bohemian decoration (or in this case, Spanish).

I just checked the pictures again and, after magnifying them, noticed that I couldn't see the Cire signature under the deer's legs on either side of the decanter. The signatures are in bright gold, so I'm surprised they didn't show on either side. Maybe the lighting wasn't right.
