I love this bowl....it looks a bit opalescent. The delicate glass on the bowl is intricate and almost jumps out. No markings or labels.
I included pics of several pieces....any info is appreciated. THANK YOU! |

This is a rose bowl. It is not Murano. I believe it is either English or Bohemian. I hope this helps some.

Thanks for the info.....do you know of its age? The "old guys" at the antique store didnt know anything. They told me it was certain to be at least 50 years old.........I didnt buy it because of that......I love the piece but am curious to its age and value.

Hi tricatravels Its English late 19th century 1880-85 perhaps Stevens & williams or others ,around this time floral patterns taken from Japanese influence were widely used to decorate glass, know as Mat-su- no-ke, the tools to make these applied flowers were patented by John Northwood in 1885 while he was at Stevens & Williams.Mat-su-no-ke translates to something like the spirit of the pine Thats my opinion others may differ.Cliff

I was thinking the same, Cliff, but wasn't sure. Harrach in Bohemia also did some of the applied glass like this, but the opalescence and base with ribs don't look like something they would do.

Thanks so much for the information. Apparently is is the style of Mat-Su-No-K but it isnt authentic. The website below lists specific criteria the piece must have for authenticity.
My piece doesnt have feet (this style must have 3, no more no less) and be stamped. My bowl has neither. Still trying to find its origin and value. Have had a hard day in collecting. One of my pieces arrived today in pieces. It was so lovely with sticker. We lost an authentic piece of Murano today......thanks post office, the box labeled fragile glass was flattened. http://theantiquarian.us/Ma-Su-No-Ke%20Info.htm I have a few other pieces that are not murano but quite interesting but cant find their origins. Since I am a novice to the terminology, I cant properly search for them. Im also eager to see if anyone knows the name of the signed piece I posted on the other thread. MANY THANKS! |

Hi tricatravels The words to describe your piece as with alot of glass is " in the style off " copies of styles have always been around thats why I said Stevens & Williams or others in my original answer ,your item has the rose bowl shape plus floral decoration, is of the period that fits with the "mat-su-no-ke style of decoration with the addition of feet it would complete the style requirement, however you could still not be sure it was Stevens & Williams as it had many imitators as you would expect with it being the popular style of the period.Good luck in your search for a definative maker.Cliff

CLiff thanks so much. You knowledge base is amazing. I am thankful to have people with such passion and expertise to help me learn.
I spent hours reading about this style of glass after your post. Admittedly I was disappointed that it wasnt authentic however, I was fascinated to learn of the origin and history. I would have NEVER found any information had I not had your kind insight. It isnt likely Ill ever find the maker or style of the bowl because of the many replications as you noted. THANKS SO MUCH!! Just wanted to update the forum that a glass expert identified this bowl as Harrach. Another less seasoned expert thought Scourbridge and they both mentioned Stevens.
Here is a link with more description. http://home.earthlink.net/~verredart...s/Harrach.html As you may know I am selling my collection to pay for medical equipment. Please let me know if you are interested. Tricia |
