Is this Murano? Any info would be helpful!

Hi

I have brough this bowl (see pictures) and would like any info.





As you can see in the UV light there is a bright orange ring and a outer green tinged ring. And controlled bubble throughout the bowl.

The bowl is apprx 12.5ch in diameter and 4cm high.

Any maker/value info would be very helpful.

One substance that glows orange under blacklight is cadmium. Cadmium is used to give glass a yellow color. It is a yellow that looks a bit like vaseline glass in its appearance (kind of milky). I don't notice any yellow in your bowl, though, under normal light. Do you see any traces of yellow in the rim circle? Cadmium is not used in glass in most places now because it is very toxic for the workers to handle. The recent scandal in Chinese toys has involved putting cadmium in the toys to give them a golden yellow color.

Your bowl looks like it could be Muranese to me, but I am not sure when it comes to this type of bowl. I hope someone will have something more definite for you.

I looked at your bowl again and I wouldn't be surprised if some cadmium was used. The bowl looks red in the picture. If there is cadmium around the rim, it should look more orange under normal light.

BTW, many pieces I've seen with cadmium were from Bohemia and surrounding areas. The popular "lemon glass" was made using cadmium. I'm sure it was used in other countries, too.

Hi mich19uk and welcome, if I am right and the uk in your user name means you are in in uk ,then in my opinion there is a good chance your bowl is Whitefriars as they also did the controlled bubble technique, try googling www.circaglass.co.uk as they have a glass bowl similar to yours.these items are difficult to i.d positivly as several countries produced similar .Cliff

Hello and thank you very much for giving me some information.

Anita there is a slight tinge of orange/yellow in the rim of the bowl but its clear. I wouldn't say milky. Would Whitefriars have used cadmium in their glass.

Cliff, that is very interesting and that bowl does look the same as my one. Yes I am in the UK. It doesn't mention anything about it glowing in UV light though. Would my one just be a little different.

Hi again having referred to my written notes that I have on Whitefriars,I can throw in that Whitefriars used the chemical Sodium uranate in their products in this type of bowl therefore,this reacts under uv light ,this helps to eliminate Murano or Scandi as makers and gives Whitefriars a better than even chance of being the correct attribution for your bowl. The glow given under u.v light is a peach colour the pratice was discontinued in 1980s. Cliff
