Unidentified Marking

I recently purchased a set consisting of a large water pitcher and FIFTEEN small cups! They all have alternating stripes of blues and greens separated by clear stripes and are very very well made. The marking on the bottom is an acid etched round signature which is almost impossible to read. It looks almost like OTTOM... and then another word which is totally illegible. Does anyone know a source where I could research such a mark? ANY HELP WOULD BE DEARLY APPRECIATED! Thanks, Lisa

Hi. Sounds like a great set.....If you can post an image of the signature and the item someone may be able to give you a hand. Without an image, its almost impossible.

Lisa, you hava a wonderful a canne set, which is unusuallly large, most sets are on the smaller size with 4-8 matching cups. Its nice to see such a large, well made set intact. As far as a manufacturer, I noty certain who made your items, but will look into it further, as the acis stamp does looks familiar to me.

Hi! Thanks for the information, I hope you do turn something up as far as the maker. I'm still really interested to find out who made this set. It's frustrating that there aren't more glass ID books on the market. Don't you think it's time for someone to compile a really good one?

Yes, your right! Murano Glass is often times a challenge, as there are so many companies, making so many different products over the years...they tend to get jumbled together, for better or worse.

There is a well regarded glass mark book mentioned in this thread:
http://forums.fossilfly.com/showthread.php?t=42, but it is pricy, and your set looks to be made post 1945. I will keep looking as I like the set quite a bit, and am intrigued as well.

I've done more research based on the term "a canne" and have found similar pieces by Venini. I've attached a Venini signature, but it still doesn't seem to match. Then, I found this pitcher set which is strikingly similar to mine. It came from an auctionhouse with the following information....

Venini Murano "a canne" art glass pitcher and 4 cup set, c.1950, after a design by Fulvio Bianconi. Composed of vertical canes of blue and green, round paper label and circular acid stamp. Pitcher 9 1/2"H x 4 3/4"W, Cups 4 1/4"H x 3 1/4"W. Excellent condition.

Nice find. Im leaning towards Venini, although this isn't the traditional Venini, Murano ITALY 3 line acid stamp or circular acid stamp. The middle ITALY part is missing, and the stamp isn't well defined, but I have seen a vase without the middle ITALY part as well. The acid stamp you have on the picture if rotated, matches well enough. I have a Venini catalog at home, and will look though it.

Well, I think the mystery is solved. Any idea what a set like mine would be worth?
