Default Fantasy Date Canes (Millefiori)

Hi all...........I acquired a pale blue cup some time in the late 80's. If it would not be for the millefiori canes, one would think this was a Carlo Moretti bicolore satinato. I know that Carlo Moretti did some millefiori in the 70's, but these canes look more Fratelli Toso to me!? Any insight into this matter will be greatly appreciated! And for that matter, is there anyone else out there in glassland that has run across any glass with fantasy date canes!? I bet that if I look hard enough, I could come up with another piece or so..............Jerry

Wow. This is This is a really interesting piece! I have seen Fratelli Toso paperweights with date canes, and also custom paperweights for special occasions with similar canes.

Take a look at this for a contemporary paperweight with a 1848 cane.

I would guess its a company mark? But which company?

Found out some more from this site, referring to paperweights only, excerpted below. Maybe they branched out into tableware? The use of Murrine is consistent.

Quote:
The Walsh and Walsh glassworks took over the Arculus company in 1931 and immediately
improved on the quality. They carried on placing a fake 1848 date cane and started using a
cane that looks loosely like a 7/6 in many of their weights, sometimes as a central feature and
sometimes in whole concentric rows.

Looks like a match to me! Thanks for posting the photos of the murrine, they will help others with similar questions. I find it very odd that they would intentionally add a false date, especially since the design and techniques are obviously modern. Do you have an idea of when the cup was truly made?

All I can tell you is that I bought the cup some time in the late 80's, and the lady that ran the small antique shop told me that she had this piece for quite a number of years and that she got it at an estate sale...........Jerry
It would be nice to solve this mystery!

I have to tell you, if it weren't for the 1848 cane, it would have had me fooled. It looks to be a quality piece, both the murrine and the cup; the design is very muranese also.
