There is an interesting article on Yahoo! (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050617/ap_on_sc/ancient_glass;_ylt=Alryyvw0yVGROge.BYgJeVsPLBIF;_y lu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl) about a very early Egyptian glassmaking archeology site. According to the article, clear, blue and red glass was made as early as 1250 BC; amazing considering that iron was not yet in use.

When did the Murano become a glass making center?
I know its been a few hundred years, but for a single island to dominate for so long is unusual.

In short, the glassmakers were all consolidated on the island of Murano in 1292, due to the fire hazard; and they haven't moved since! We have a history of Murano Glass (http://www.fossilfly.com/history_of_Murano_glass.htm) on our site for more info.
