Another mystery....

Found this candle holder at yet another estate sale. It's about 12" tall and about 4" wide across the bowl. It's red with a clear edge but gradually turns to amber toward the base. No markings or labels anywhere

Does it look Italian or something else?

Hi. Its a very unusual piece...with some great coloration..looks like a half a vase..I can't say that I have ever seen anything similar to it.

Neither have I. I thought it was very interesting though. Someone suggested it was Scandinavian, not Italian. Any thoughts?

Madcat, Sometimes it can be very difficult to differientiate between Scandanavian and Murano, especially with much of the glass made in the past 20 years. Yours is unique, can't say that I have seen anything similar recently. I dont know if that is a good or bad thing :p

This is probably a Flygsfor Swedish glass candleholder vase, a Viking art Glass lookalike. Viking made these in the 1960s-1950s, but the light colored rim points to Flygsfor.

I concur. My first thought, due to the shape, was Viking but these appear to be lower in the front and, as Darcele mentioned, the clear rim is more consistant with Flygsfor. They're very pretty :) Nice find.

I don't know American glass too much but the orangey red colour suggests Blenko as a possibilty.

I did a little digging to see what I could come up with as far as an ID for your candle holders and found a site that might be helpful. I don't know if this board has a policy on pasting links so I'll just draw you a map ;) I believe these Viking candle holders are the same as yours.

Google "retro art glass taperglow", click the first link in the list then "orange" to the left, go to page "3" and it should be the third item from the top. Hope that helps.

The Viking taperglows that I checked on at http://www.vikingartglass.com/index.php?pg=item.php&inv_id=902
look different. The clarity of the glass makes me think it is Scandinavian or German. Flygsfor (how do you say that??) is a good possibility, IMO.

One of the most difficult things I've found for identifying glass online is that searching gives so many results that can't be narrowed down by selective use of keywords. So many places have catalogs of so much glass that it is hard to locate the one piece being looked for (unless it is well described on eBay).

Hey bidda, Links are fine. The only ones I ever have an issue with are the spammy ones that are obviously commercial with little value to the members.

Flygsfors is a Swedish glass maker that made alot "Swedish Modern" styles in the mid-century and their designs were often similiar to Viking Art Glass. I don't know who was copying who, but Viking's glass is always prettier. It's pronounced "Fligsfers".
