Hi, all. I just picked this up on ebay, probably for way too much, but so it goes. It's about 12x9x3 inches. Can anybody tell me about it?

thanks,

Mark

What you have my friend is a bowl by Fratelli Toso.
Fratelli Toso can usually be identified by an organic shape, use of foils, bold colors and a round blue label. Yours has all of the above!

Nice find! How much did you pay?

Thanks for the info, Tina. I won it for $97. There were a couple of bidders that wanted it as badly as did, so maybe it got out of control. Maybe I did OK. I have no idea. I'm fairly new to Murano glass, so I have a lot to learn. I just saw this piece and figured it was kind of special. So, how did I do?

BTW, is there a thread on the forum where people share pix of their collections?

Thanks,

Mark

I agree that it is a Fratelli Toso bowl -- an ashtray. It is similar to those that are commonly called butterfly bowls. Sorry, I don't have anything similar to this right now. The bowl I won is an apparenza, which is like a very colorful Starry Nights. Butterfly bowls are usually appraised between $100-150, depending on size and opalescence. It you like the bowl, it is all that matters :)

I am also new on the forum and your answer really pleased me...I have a piece of Murano with a blue round label, black encasement, but has a lot gold flakes.. A very striking piece. It's 11" X 7" w. and 4" H.
You mentioned a butterfly bowl. Are these bowls shaped some what like a butterfly? I didn't see the butterfly bowl.

Yes, butterfly bowls are shaped like butterflies. They have two wings and short paired projections in the middle that look like butterfly body :-) The two short projections are actually to holding cigarettes. The butterfly bowls are ashtrays.

The blue round label and black glass makes it sound like you may have a Fratelli Toso. The base on the piece shown in this post is very typical for Toso's black pieces.

Thanks Anita..I started to collect murano in the 70's, not knowing what it was. I just liked the unusal pieces. I'm 76 years young and I haven't bought any glass for the past 15 years, since my husband died, so I guess my collection is really vintage. Hopefully "no fakes". I've been thinking of selling it all, but don't know exactly where or how to do it. Any input would be appreciated.

deeze1, Hi. The easiest way to attache a photo is to press the "insert image" icon ion the menu toobar, and browse for the image that you want to add. Remeber, that the forum will only accept images up to approximately 6x6 inches, to reduce storage space and loading times for the forum.

if you are looking to sell your glass, you may want to wade into Ebay. You can usually get a fair price and its relatively easy.

I guess I will sell it, eventually, but I have had it so long I will certainly miss it...But at my age, I can't take it with me and if it will give other people as much pleasure as it has given me, that will be good. I only safe-guarded it for someone for future pleasure.

I found the exact Butterfly bowl in the Italian Glass , century 20, book by Leslie Pina. Needless to say, I was very pleased.

Thanks . You have been very helpful

P.S. I haven't figured out how to send pictures yes...Giggle...

I had problems with posting pictures as well, as long as they are around 8x8 or smaller, you can attach them directly from your by pressing the "manage attachments" button when you respond to a post.

You can also get someone to sell it for you on ebay. There are people who do that for a small fee. Check on the ebay site for more information.
