Hi, I recently purchased a lidded coppa in ruby and green glass. It has a cut glass knob. I am led to believe that this is Murano glass but apart from the Venini obelisks, I've not noticed this technique in Murano glass. I am completely new to this and so I'd appreciate your views.

There are three cutting techniques often used for Murano glass -- battuto, inciso, and velato. You can see pictures of battuto and inciso at http://www.the-loschs.com/technik/technik1.html. I don't think the techniques would be used on only a knob. Some companies, e.g. Salir, did cut decorations and painting similar to some Czech glass. Without seeing your piece, it is impossible to say whether it might have been done in Murano.

Many Italian glass companies outside of Murano and several other countries throughout the world made cut glass. If you can post a picture, someone may be able to help.
