Hello!
I was referred to this board from an Ebay discussion board to get an id on this Murano decanter.

Ok, so its definitely Murano. The original sticker remains and identifies it as such. It stands 17 inches tall including the stopper. The gold circles you see, are actually lion heads. There are 2 total, 1 on each side. The pics are less than fabulous, but I took them quickly at my client's home.

So, any ideas on companies? Have you seen anything similar?

Thanks a Bunch!

Hi. Take a look at this thread:

I believe its identical!

Also, Salviati or Suegso comes to mind, but I would have to look into that a bit further, as they have made other items with embossed lions heads. However, I do not believe the lable is typical of either Salviati or Seguso.

I have seen decanters like this one several times recently on eBay and some other places, but I can't remember what was said about them. Maybe I will remember something soon. They are modern decanters and not by Salviati or Seguso. Salviati used to do lion masks in the 19th and early 20th Century, but now that the company is French-owned, their products are more practical (less foo-foo :-)

I will look around to see if I can remember anything about the decanter. The mask placement makes the decanters look like the old doughnut decanters in small pictures. That is what drew me to read about them.

[Could you tell us exactly what the label says? If it says something like "Hand Blown Venetian Crystal, Made in Murano Italy," the decanter may have been made for a wine company.]

Fossilfly -

That helped me immensely. The previous post was the same, less the stopper. I guess I assumed that the lion was on both sides once I saw the first.

I wanted to ask you a couple of questions, if that's ok. And I know very little about Murano/Venetian glass, so if I say something stupid, please excuse me.

When I typed in Salviati, I found 2 listings for this decanter, on 2 different sites, again missing the stopper. But no one actually says how they know to attribute it that way. Is there a particular feature that leads you to suspect Salviati?

I also looked into Seguso. I did find an example of their lion head, but the design appeared more abstract than the one on this decanter. Should I still consider that particular designer/company?

Lastly, 2 listings on Ebay have it attributed to Bolovier. I think they should have spelled it Balovier. But, do you lend much credence to that?

Thank you so much for what you have all ready done for me! I feel like I at least have a footing now. You've made my day!

Anita-

That is exactly how the label reads. As I said in the post just before this, I was able to find a few of them, but I was unable to locate anything in the completed auction section of Ebay.

And when you say modern, I assume you mean mid century modern and not contemporary modern, right? The owner places it at least in the 60s, and she's been pretty credible with the other items I have from her.

Thanks a million!

By modern, I meant 1970's and later. I have a beautiful Nailsea-type fenicio decanter that has a label like yours (except the label is silver on black and on bottom). My decanter was made by a modern Murano company -- I don't know who -- for Bischoff Brandy in Italy. Unfortunately, the fragmented Bischoff Brandy label didn't have the date on it, so I don't know how old the bottle is.

When I saw your decanter, something made me think that it was made for a liquor or wine company. The stopper may be added -- I have seen several like it sold separately -- or it may be made by the same company. If it is added, it is definitely a good match.

If I come across something I will definitely let you know. Sometimes I read so much and look at so many pictures that I have a hard time keeping it all straight. Having a photographic memory would definitely be a gift for glass people.
